There are all
sorts of strange things going on at the moment, but
here's one that is both unusual and worthy.
How would you like the chance to be a World
Record Holder? Because that's what is on offer here. Yes,
you could be able to stand up in the pub and say, without
a word of a lie, that you hold a world record. Well, you participated
in a world record, anyway.
The record attempt is to gather the largest
number of Santas on motorbikes ever seen in one place. It
happens at Rockingham Raceway on 19th December, and you ought
to be there. The current record, of 5443, is held by Portugal.
And that won't do at all. We believe that we should make a
major effort and treble the current record. So we're hoping
to see upwards of 15,000 Santas on motorbikes on the day.
You do not have to ride there in your Santa suit and you should,
of course, make sure that your beard doesn't obstruct your
view of the road...
I mentioned a worthy cause, and there is
one involved. Antics is a charity devoted to helping children
with, or affected by, cancer. This is what they say about
themselves:
Antics is a charity that supports children
(under 18s) who have or are affected by cancer. The charity
focuses its support on distributing funds to children for
a number of reasons for example if a parent or sibling suffers
from cancer. Antics enables that child to deal with the illness
through counselling, respite care or a number of other avenues.
That's a worthy cause if ever there was one. It's a shame
that Silverstone Circuit don't seem to think so, as the event
was supposed to take place there and was all set to do so
until the circuit asked for £10,000 for the day. Recordbreakers,
the company behind the attempt, couldn't cover the cost themselves
and refused to take it from the charity. Fortunately Rockingham
have bigger hearts and maybe a more forward-thinking approach
as well, because they stepped in with an alternative venue.
So all you need to do is get yourself registered and raise
a minimum of £20 sponsorship. We'll be fielding a team
and hopefully we'll see you there. Oh, and although you have
to pay the £20 yourself for entry, you can have it back
from the sponsorship if you want. That's official too - not
just my being generous with someone else's money...
